Book Review: Biodynamic, Organic and Natural Winemaking Sustainable Viticulture and Viniculture

The authors Britt and Per Karlsson are respected Swedish wine journalists who live in Paris and conduct their BKWine business from there.
They visit 200 wineries every year, organize wine tours to different regions, conduct seminars, and teach about wine appreciation.

This well illustrated book about different styles of wines is timely, as millions of environmentally responsible consumers are starting to look for products les manipulated during production – be it wine or food, or anything consumable.

There is considerable confusion about organic, biodynamic, natural and sustainable wines.
The authors clarify all the differences between styles, and provide lists about producers of biodynamic or natural or sustainable or organic wineries.

The breakdown of authorized certification companies or organizations
and their evaluation is particularly revealing.

There are no worldwide standards about biodynamic, organic, sustainable, or natural wine production. Each country and certification organization has its own peculiar rules and regulations, which the authors document in detail.

Undoubtedly, organic, of biodynamic wines contain no harmful pesticides or fungicides, but the question whether or not “factory” produces mass-market wines harm the health of consumers is still not answered.

Mass-market producers source grapes from non-organic farmers, but this should not be interpreted that their fruit is full of pesticides or fungicides. Only grape growers in humid and cool regions resort to spraying their vineyards a few times during the growing season.

In hot and dry vineyards there is no need to spray therefore grapes contain no pesticides and/or fungicides.

The authors debate all these points and leave it up to the reader to make his/her decision. This is definitely a very valuable book for every wine enthusiast, regular wine drinker and winemakers.

Highly recommended.
