Domini – A New Winery in Portugal’s Douro Valley

wine

The New Millennium started with an auspicious wine event – the creation of a modern winery by two powerful personalities – Cristiano van Zeller, of Quinta do Noval fame, and Jose Maria da Fonseca, a well-established and large Portuguese winery.

The philosophy of the winery is to produce the best wines possible in

the Douro Valley, from the vineyards of the Quinta do Vale Dona Maria which was purchased specifically to upgrade and bring it to modern viticultural standards.

In addition, Quinta do Vale de Mina and Quinta de Mos were acquired, both of which are situated in the most desirable middle Douro.

The Douro Valley follows the eponymous river that flows into Portugal from Spain.

Viticulturally the valley is divided into three parts Baixa-, Cima- and Superior Corgo Douro, the last of which is very rugged but yields the best fruit for ports.

Cima- and Baixa Douro being closer tot the Atlantic Ocean receive more precipitation and yield fine fruit for table wines.

Domini produces also vintage and L B V ports with purchased fruit from contract growers.

Touriga nacional, touriga franca, and tinta roriz (aka tempranillo in Spain) grapes are purchased from growers with vineyards that are 10 – 15 years old.

The winery is small, but equipped with the most modern machinery and best barrels money can buy. The wines of 2000 vintage were released in 2002 to great acclaim.

Domini Douro blends all the three most popular grapes and ages for four months in small, new Allier barrels. The wine displays intense fruit aromas with a medium bodily and fine balance.

Domini Plus contains 40 per cent tinta roriz, 40 tinta baroca, and 20 touriga nacional is aged for eight months. It has a deep red, brilliant colour, fine black berry aromas, tastes spicy, chocolaty with a long and satisfying aftertaste. It can be cellared for at least five years.
