Greek Wine Festival 2016 – Toronto

Wine Festival

Greek Wine Festival

Greece has been on the forefront of wine making and trading in the ancient world.
Greek traders introduced wine to Romans, established several cities with wine making facilities and planted vineyards.

Some of the vines they brought with them like Greco di tufo still thrive in Campania.
Up to 1980’s Greek wines were of mediocre quality at best, but joining the EU and receiving millions in development funding, vitviniculture quality improved immeasurably. Many of the young and ambitious wine makers were sent to European countries and the USA to study oenology.

Now, many of the 900 or so wineries make fine, in some cases, outstanding wines, which they proudly pour in several cities in the USA, Germany, Scandinavian countries, the United Kingdom and Canada.

This year, 47 wineries poured 122 wines to an eager trade and public in the Royal Ontario Museum. For the first time in many years organizers offered oysters on the half shell, shrimp, and other seafood, along with roasted lamb shank and grilled scallop on risotto with peas.

Even retsina wine improved and some have become pleasant enough to consider for dinner.
Savatiano from Attica, the official variety for retsina is actually quite pleasant.
There were 122 wines of which I tasted 68, and scored 88 and over for 28 of them.

Soon some will be available at the Danforth Street LCBO store, others are consignment products and yet others must be imported upon orders.
