Professor B’s August 22 Vintages Release Recommendations

This mid-summer release features northwestern North American wine producing regions – Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia.

Geographically northwestern North America is natural topographical region. Political events between England and France divided the region into two belonging to Canada and the U.S.A.
An American professor of geography rightly called it Ecotopia in 1980’s.

Undoubtedly, Oregon produces notable pinot noirs, but now increasingly also chardonnay and pinot gris.
Washington State is famous for riesling on coastal AVA’s, and inland for red grapes, mainly cabernet sauvignon and merlot.

The rest this Vintages release consists of relatively inexpensive, and a few “value” wines, with the exception of one Napa Valley cabernet sauvignon that is, in my opinion, way overpriced.

My recommendations are:

Sparkling wine

Cremant d’Alsace Rose,, J. Cattin, Alsace, France
Cherry aromas dominate the nose. Light, refreshing and balanced with a touch of sweetness.

This outstandin Oak knoll Distirct chardonnay smells of pineapples, pears and melons. Int eh mouth, buttery flavorus captivate. Full bodied and well balanced.

Offers impressive ripe tropical fruit, citrus and cinnamon aromas. It is a tangy, crisp, balanced and expertly made wine, with hints of vanilla.

Alexander valley Chardonnay, 2012, Robert Young, Sonoma County, California
Dark brilliant yellow in colour. Smells of pears, and figs dominate the nose. Creamy mouth feel. A graceful style with subtle nuances due to ageing. Long aftertaste.

A fine wine to enjoy with roast leg of lamb, or roast rack of lamb, or breaded provimi veal cutlets or provimi scaloppini fried in clarified butter, or grilled lamb chops.

A blend of estate grown grapes.An excellent and masterful blend of 45, 30, 25 shiraz, grenache, and mourvedre. A well balanced, deeply flavoured wine emanating red and black fruit aromas. Medium weight. Long finish.
