Professor B’s January 24 Vintages Release Recommendations

Vintage’s first and second releases of the year are always relatively small (approximately 100 brands).

This eyar’s second release contains one champagne, one cremant d’Alsace, one cava from Spain, on Madeira from Portugal, one sherry for Spain, two whiskies, 29 white wines, and the remainder red.

Almost all products are modestly priced, as buyers know that after Christmas consumers tend to be more cautious on spending especially alcohol.

My selections are:

Auriverdes Islay Single Malt, Ardbeg, Scotland, United Kingdom
A superbly crafted, elegant, smooth, intense and lightly spiced Scotch.

Chardonnay, 2012, Calera, Central Coast, California
Golden colour. Aromas of ripe apples, pears, and brioche. Medium bodied, well balanced with a remarkably long finish.

Bourgogne Chardonnay, 2012, Bachelder, Burgundy, France
Thomas Bachelder is a veteran winemaker who worked in Oregon, Burgundy, and Ontario, for a number of years.
Now he created a company to produce fine wines from these three regions. He now works in Ontario’s Niagara Peninsula and produces his Ontario chardonnays and pinot noirs as virtual wines. He purchases the grapes and “virtually” produces them in all three regions. This is the Burgundy version.
Golden colour. Aromatically very enticing. In the mouth, intense, smooth, and layered in a range of flavours. Well balanced, with a long finish.

Pale yellow brilliant colour. Aromas of white flowers, peaches, and pears dominate. Medium bodied, elegant, with fine minerality in the mouth, makes this wine a prime choice for shucked oysters, seafood pates, sautéed shrimp with dill and Pernod, boiled lobster with drawn butter, or mussels mariniere.

Garnet colour. Aromas of ripe berries waft out of the glass. In the mouth, this full-bodied wine offers cedar and vanilla notes. Well balanced with a long and satisfying aftertaste.
Enjoy with roast rack of lamb, roast leg of lamb, medium- or hard cheeses.

Dark, almost inky red. Fruity, powerful, full bodied, and well
